VAN TOTH was appointed Chief of Police on October 3, 2005 as the former Chief of Police retired. Chief Toth was raised in Hialeah, Florida and graduated the police academy in November of 1982. His career includes, service with the State of Florida Department of Corrections, where he left at the rank of Sergeant, in charge of all departmental training, while also serving as a reserve officer with the City of Hialeah Police Department during the same time. He later moved on to the Medley Police Department and followed by joining the Hialeah Gardens Police Department in 1987 where he has served for over 21 years. Throughout these years he has been instrumental in every aspect of the organization, from a promotion to Sergeant then Lieutenant; he developed and established a number of successful programs within the department. With these accomplishments, he will continue to lead the police department into the future. Chief Toth is married to wife Vivian and has two sons Andrew and Matthew.

Chief Toth is a graduate of Florida International University and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and a minor in Public Administration. Additionally, he attained a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Likewise, he graduated from the prestigious University of Louisville, Southern Police Institute, Command Officer Development. Chief Toth is an adjunct professor at Florida International University since 2003, as well as once a senior instructor at the School of Justice, (Police Academy), and Miami Dade College since 1987, in high liability areas.


Chief Toth affiliations include, The International Association of Chief of Police, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, and the Dade County Chief’s of Police Association.
